Organizational Alliances
International Internet Preservation Consortium (IIPC)
The Library of Congress is one of the founding members of the IIPC. The Library and the national libraries of Australia, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Iceland, Italy, Norway, Sweden, the British Library and the Internet Archive (USA) acknowledged the importance of international collaboration for the preservation of digital materials when they formed the consortium. The IIPC's goals are:
- "To enable the collection of a rich body of Internet content from around the world to be preserved in a way that it can be archived, secured and accessed over time."
- "To foster the development and use of common tools, techniques and standards that enable the creation of international archives."
- "To encourage and support national libraries everywhere to address Internet archiving and preservation."
Digital Library Federation
Since its inception, NDIIPP has worked closely with the Digital Library Federation (DLF) and its allies. Many members of the DLF consortium have partnered with NDIIPP to undertake specific projects. The DLF and NDIIPP share common goals to identify and preserve significant digital content; support the improvement of tools, models and methods for digital preservation; and establish and extend collaborative mechanisms.
National Archives and Records Administration
The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) and the Library of Congress both have a core mission to preserve and make available information, much of which is increasingly in digital form. Top NARA and Library of Congress managers regularly participate on digital preservation advisory boards established by both agencies. The agencies also work together in setting strategic goals and implementing new technologies and services. NARA is involved in specific NDIIPP projects, and the agencies commonly exchange details regarding research, standards and best practices.
National Science Foundation
The National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Library of Congress are partnering to advance a broad set of research activities relating to digital libraries and archives. A key outcome is the Digital Archiving and Long-Term Preservation (DIGARCH) research program. DIGARCH funds cutting-edge projects to, among other things, preserve complex data types, automate curatorial services and explore incentives for creators to deposit with archives. The projects are integrated within the NDIIPP partnership network. NSF and NDIIPP also share a common interest in strengthening the national cyberinfrastructure.
Digital Preservation in the United Kingdom
NDIIPP is closely involved with digital preservation initiatives in the United Kingdom. The Chief Executive of the British Library serves on the NDIIPP National Digital Strategy Advisory Board. Staff from the British Library and NDIIPP frequently meet to exchange technical and operational information about digital preservation systems and services. The UK Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) is providing national guidance and support for improved use of information technology for learning and shares a number of objectives with NDIIPP. JISC and NDIIPP meet regularly through focused workshops and conferences. The Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) fosters projects to preserve digital resources in the United Kingdom and works with others internationally. NDIIPP is a formal DPC Allied Organization.
