The Library of Congress is located on Capitol Hill in southeast Washington, DC.  It comprises three buildings that are adjacent to each other: the Thomas Jefferson Building (located across the street from the U.S. Capitol), the James Madison Building (101 Independence Avenue, SE) and the John Adams Building (2nd Street, SE).

The symposium will take place in the Thomas Jefferson Building.  Enter the Jefferson Building from 1st Street, SE at the carriage door located underneath the exterior staircase and pass through security.  The Coolidge Auditorium is down the hallway to the left on the right side.

Traveling to Washington DC

Three airports serve the Washington metropolitan area: Ronald Reagan National Airport and Dulles International Airport, both located in Virginia, and Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI), which is located in Maryland. All three offer transportation to Washington by van shuttle, public transit, and taxi. The airport closest to the Library of Congress is Reagan National (about 5 miles away), which has direct Metro train service. Our two international airports, Dulles and BWI, are approximately the same distance from the Library (about 30 miles). Road-travel times are estimated below, but may be longer during rush hour (about 6:30 to 9:30am and 3:00 to 7:00pm on weekdays) or in bad weather.

Directions to Hotel from DCA – Reagan National Airport:
Via Taxi: Driving time is about 15 minutes. The estimated fare is $20 and is payable by cash only, unless you request a cab that takes credit cards.

  • Take George Washington Memorial Parkway North toward Washington
  • Take 14th Street Bridge exit (ramp is to the right).
  • Follow signs to Interstate 395 North.
  • Cross over the 14th Street Bridge into Washington.
  • Stay right to continue on I-395 and look for the signs for 6th Street, SE (you will pass exits for the US Capitol and South Capitol Street).
  • Turn left onto 6th Street, SE.
  • Turn left onto Pennsylvania Avenue, SE.
  • Turn left onto 2nd Street, SE. The Madison Building will be on your right.
  • Turn left onto C Street, SE. The Capitol Hill Hotel is on the corner of 2nd and C Streets.

Via Shuttle: SuperShuttle is a door-to-door van service that takes passengers between the airport and their destination in shared ride vans. Depending on the number of passengers, the van may make multiple stops. Upon arrival at the airport, claim your luggage on the lower level. Follow signs for Ground Transportation to the SuperShuttle boarding area, located curbside at each terminal. A representative will arrange transportation to your destination. The fare is approximately $12 and is payable by cash, traveler’s check, or credit card.

To return to the airport, call the local reservation number at (800) 258-3826 or visit www.supershuttle.com at least 24 hours in advance to schedule your pickup.

Via the Metro: The Metro station is located directly at Ronald Reagan National Airport. From Terminal B and C, use either of two enclosed pedestrian bridges on the concourse level which connect to the station. From Terminal A, exit and board any airport shuttle bus. Get off at the stops for Parking Garages B or C (bus shelter #3 or #5) to access the bridge to the Metro station. Purchase a farecard from a kiosk using cash or a credit card. You will need to scan your farecard upon entrance and again upon exit. Take the Blue Line in the direction of Largo Town Center, 14 stops to Capitol South. Travel time is approximately 25 minutes. To return to the airport, go to Capitol South station and take the Blue Line in the direction of Franconia to the Reagan National Airport station. To access Terminal C, go to the north end of the train platform; for Terminal B, go to the south end. For Terminal A, exit the station towards the parking garage and board any airport shuttle bus.

Directions to Hotel from Dulles International Airport:
Via Taxi: Driving time is just under 1 hour. The estimated fare is $65 and is payable by cash only, unless you request a cab that takes credit cards.

  • Take Dulles Airport Access Road.
  • Take Interstate 66 East toward Washington.
  • Cross the Potomac into Washington on the Theodore Roosevelt Bridge.
  • Proceed straight onto Constitution Avenue toward the US Capitol.
  • Turn right onto 7th Street, NW.
  • Turn left onto Independence Avenue, SW. On the left you will see the US Capitol and the Thomas Jefferson Building. On the right you will pass the James Madison Memorial Building.
  • Turn right onto 2nd Street, SE.
  • Turn left onto C Street, SE. The Capitol Hill Hotel is on the corner of 2nd and C Streets.

Via Shuttle: SuperShuttle is a door-to-door van service that takes passengers between the airport and their destination in shared ride vans. Depending on the number of passengers, the van may make multiple stops. Upon arrival at the airport, claim your luggage and follow signs towards Ground Transportation/ Shared Ride Vans. SuperShuttle ticket counters are located on the lower level, just before the exit. When your ticket number is called, proceed outside where a uniformed Guest Service Representative will assist you. The fare is approximately $25 and is payable by cash, traveler’s check, or credit card.

Via Bus/Metro: There is no Metro station at the airport. You will need to take the Washington Flyer Bus Service from the airport to the West Falls Church Metro station. Purchase a ticket for the bus near Arrivals Door #4 in the Main Terminal. Tickets are $9 one way. Buses depart from this location every 30 minutes at 15 and 45 minutes after the hour. At the metro station, purchase a farecard from a kiosk using cash or credit card. You will need to scan your farecard upon entrance and again upon exit. Take the Orange Line in the direction of New Carrollton 15 stops to Capitol South. Total travel time from Dulles is approximately one hour. See directions to the hotel from Capitol South below.

On your return to the airport, take the Orange Line in the direction of Vienna, 15 stops to the West Falls Church station. Follow signs to the Washington Flyer/Dulles Airport Shuttle bus stop. Tickets may be purchased using a credit card only or with cash upon arrival at the airport. Buses depart every 30 minutes at 15 and 45 minutes after the hour. The bus goes directly to the front door of the main terminal.

Directions to Hotel from Baltimore/Washington International Airport:
Via Taxi: Driving time is usually under an hour. The estimated fare is $75 and is payable by cash only, unless you request a cab that takes credit cards.

  • Take I-95 West toward Washington.
  • Take Baltimore/Washington Parkway/MD-295 South exit towards Washington, exit 2B.
  • After 25 miles, exit to Pennsylvania Avenue toward Washington.
  • Drive about 17 blocks to 2nd Street, SE.
  • Turn left onto 2nd Street, SE. The Madison Building will be on your right.
  • Turn left onto C Street, SE. The Capitol Hill Hotel is on the corner of 2nd and C Streets.

Via Shuttle: SuperShuttle is a door-to-door van service that takes passengers between the airport and their destination in shared ride vans. Depending on the number of passengers, the van may make multiple stops. Upon arrival at the airport, claim your luggage. Proceed to the SuperShuttle ground transportation counters, located on the lower level between Southwest Airlines luggage carousels numbers 1-5 at the Pier A/B baggage claim, and next to baggage claim 10 at Pier C. When your ticket number is called, proceed outside where a uniformed Guest Service Representative will assist you. The fare is approximately $30 and is payable by cash, traveler’s check, or credit card.

Via Train: Exit the airport and board a shuttle bus to the BWI Rail Station, which is approximately 5 minutes away. Purchase train tickets in the office. Amtrak trains provide service from the BWI Rail Station into Washington, DC. Travel time is approximately 30-40 minutes and a one-way fare is between $12-42 depending on the service chosen. Visitors may also take the less expensive Maryland commuter rail line (MARC) from BWI to Union Station on weekdays. Travel time is approximately 40 minutes and a one-way fare is $6. Via Bus/Metro: Take the Metrobus B30 line from BWI to Greenbelt Metro Station, (http://www.wmata.com/bus/timetables/md/b30.pdf). Travel time is approximately 30 minutes and a one-way fare is $6, exact change only. Once at the metro station, purchase a farecard from a kiosk using cash or credit card. You will need to scan your farecard upon entrance and again upon exit. Take the Green Line in the direction of Branch Avenue to L’Enfant Plaza. Change trains and take the Blue Line toward Largo or the Orange Line toward New Carrollton to Capitol South. Total travel time from BWI is approximately one hour. Directions to Hotel from Union Station:
Amtrak arrives at Union Station, as do the local Maryland (MARC) and Virginia (VRE) commuter trains. From Union Station, follow walking directions or take a cab. The walking time is approximately 15 minutes. Taxis are also available at a charge of approximately $8.

  • Upon exiting Union Station, cross the circle.
  • Walk south on 1st Street, NE towards the US Capitol.
  • Continue past the Supreme Court and the Jefferson Building of the Library of Congress on your left and the US Capitol on your right.
  • Turn left on Independence Avenue and pass the Madison Building on the right.
  • Turn right onto 2nd Street, SE.
  • Turn left onto C Street, SE. The Capitol Hill Hotel is on the corner of 2nd and C Streets.

Via Bus from Union Station: Take the red circulator bus from Union Station to Independence Avenue and 2nd Street, SE. Exit the bus at the stop in front of the Madison Building and follow directions to the hotel above. The bus runs every 10 minutes from 6am-7pm. Visit www.dccirculator.com for more details. Walking Directions to Hotel from Capitol South Metro:
The Capitol South Metro station is located at the corner of 1st and C Streets, SE.

  • Walk north along 1st Street.
  • Turn right onto C Street.
  • Walk one block to 2nd Street and the Capitol Hill Hotel will be on your left at the corner of 2nd and C Streets, SE.
