May 14, 2009 -- On April 21, 2009, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization and 32 partner institutions launched the World Digital Library (external link).
The web site showcases unique cultural materials from libraries and archives in many nations.
Librarian of Congress James H. Billington first proposed the WDL in 2005.
The project aims to expand the volume and variety of cultural content on the Internet, provide resources for educators, scholars, and general audiences and narrow the digital divide within and between countries by building capacity in partner countries.
